People

Jacqueline (Jack) McSweeney, Assistant Professor
Jack earned her PhD in Physical Oceanography from Rutgers University in 2017. She completed postdocs at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Oregon State University before joining the faculty at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University in 2022. Beyond her research and teaching activities, Jack is an active advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within academia. Outside of work, she enjoys cooking up elaborate dinners, family adventures, hiking, kayaking, and chasing after her energetic young daughters!

Lang (Maggie) Ming, MS student
Maggie graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Stony Brook University in 2022 and continued to pursue her passion for ocean science as a master’s student in 2023. She volunteered in the McSweeney lab on an internal wave projects for a year and is currently focusing on salinity variability in the Great South Bay following the breaches. Maggie is interested in interdisciplinary studies and aspires to contribute to environmental protection through her research. Outside of work, she enjoys playing tennis, hiking, riding motorcycles, and working out.

Haocheng (Sebastian) Yang, PhD student
Sebastian graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Ocean University of China in 2024 and joined the lab in fall 2024. His thesis work examines drivers of salinity and temperature variability on the New York Bight Shelf using glider and mooring data. Outside work, he loves reading books, watching movies, and playing LEGO.

Fatemeh Najafian, PhD student
Fatemeh graduated with a M.S. in Physical Oceanography from Ocean University of Tehran and joined the lab in spring 2025 to continue studying physical oceanography as a PhD student. Her research at SBU will focus on heat transport in estuaries. Outside of work, she loves cooking, exploring cozy cafes and walking.

Matt Learn, Glider Technician
Matt earned his B.S. in Biological Oceanography from Rutgers University in 2024, followed by a M.S. in Operational Oceanography in 2025, where he focused his Master’s thesis on advancing Slocum glider navigation tools. His work reflects a strong interest in marine technology, particularly autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) such as Slocum gliders. When he’s not working with gliders, Matt can usually be found reading science fiction, digging through vinyl records, fishing, or bugging his cat.

Rituparna Basak, Research Analyst
Rituparna is a passionate Mathematician who recently finished her PhD in Applied Mathematics. She’s now diving into the world of internal waves, which she finds totally fascinating. When she’s not busy with research, you can find her whipping up delicious dishes in the kitchen, painting pictures or exploring new places.
Former Lab Members

Jacqueline Kelly, undergraduate student
Jacqueline graduated from SUNY New Paltz in Spring 2025 with a BS in Physics. She spent the summer of 2024 working in the McSweeney lab on the Mid-Atlantic Bight Internal Waves Project and continued her research for her fall Senior Project. Jacqueline is passionate about the environment, especially the ocean, as well as access to STEM education for everyone. When not working and studying, she enjoys reading, running, and hiking.

Gabe Schoor, high school student
Gabe is now an undergrad at UC Berkley but worked in our lab when he was a student at Kings Park High School (Fall 2023- Spring 2025). He studied the effect of background shear on internal waves in central California. He has also worked on electrical and environmental engineering projects in the past and wishes to pursue research in these fields. Outside of work and school, Gabe enjoys playing guitar, tennis, hiking, and going to the gym.
